Máté Herczeg studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he earned his Master’s degree in Opera and Music Theatre. A prize-winner at the Éva Andor and József Simándy International Singing Competitions, he has shaped his artistry in masterclasses with Thomas Quasthoff, Barbara Frittoli, Francisco Araiza, and Vivica Genoux.
His career has taken him to stages across Europe — in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Poland, Croatia, and Slovakia — with appearances at the Great Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Müpa Budapest, the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, and the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria in Santander. The Salzburg Festival holds a central place in his career, with over twenty appearances on its stages, including the world premiere of Mischa Tangian’s Ping Pong (2023) in the leading role of Vlad, and collaborations with the Mozarteum Orchestra.
Recent highlights include the principal role of Seikyo in Tan Dun’s Tea: A Mirror of the Soul at Müpa Budapest, Handel’s Messiah under Elisabeth Fuchs at the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Salzburg, Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia in Germany, and the baritone solo in Bartók’s Cantata Profana with the Warsaw National Philharmonic under Paolo Bortolameolli.
Upcoming engagements include Orff’s Carmina Burana at the Brucknerhaus Linz, and the principal role of Seikyo in a new production of Tan Dun’s Tea: A Mirror of the Soul at Suntory Hall Tokyo, as part of the hall’s 40th anniversary season.
His operatic repertoire spans Don Giovanni, Figaro, Papageno, Dottor Malatesta, and Silvio; his concert repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah, Duruflé’s Requiem, and Brahms’ Die schöne Magelone.
„Graf von Eberbach (Máté Herczeg) possessed a commanding baritone voice, which filled the room, and he performed the aria 'Heiterkeit und Fröhlichkeit' with convincing hedonistic charm.”
